Announcements

Big news!!! After many many requests and an impossible to ignore cosmic demand Sangodare has created a structured process and community for people seeking to put into practice the spiritual technologies Sangodare preaches about here each month. This community is open to all seekers AND centered on the divine role of BIPOC who transcend gender binaries. To learn more check out the website: https://www.transcendpractice.com/

Also in celebration of Ntozake Shange’s birthday, which is also the 5th anniversary of Alexis’s father Clyde Gumbs joining the ancestors, Alexis is hosting Fierce Love a writing hour in honor of Ntozake Shange on Monday 10/18 at 8pm ET. This event kicks off the launch of Sculpted Impulse: A Ntozake Shange Immersion, a curriculum for embodying change based on Alexis’s research and work as the literary advisor to the Shange Trust.

We are also excited and grateful to announce the success of the first workday on the loveland at Soul Sanctuary, Mobile Homecoming’s emerging retreat space for spiritual practice. We can’t wait to see you there soon!

AND there are a couple of spots left for our in person Black Feminist Breathing Retreat at the Soul Sanctuary coming up November 6-7. We would love to see you there.

Visionary Daughtering

This Sunday we are encouraging everyone to participate in the annual Allied Media Conference. Especially the panel on abolition at noon EST and the closing ceremony at 6:30pm EST created by our beloved Toshi Reagon and which features the words and walking of our favorite preacher (Sangodare!) You can watch all the AMC Mainstage events here: https://amc.alliedmedia.org/. (No registration required)

And if you want something from us in particular, this video of what Sangodare calls “Sista Docta’s first sermon” follows up on the idea of visionary daughtering that we talked about last week as we celebrated Ida B. Wells and Assata Shakur. This is Alexis giving the inaugural lecture for the Women of Color Initiative Speaker Series at Michigan State University at the generous invitation of Black feminist geniuses Rae Paris and Yomaira Figueroa. Sangodare calls it a sermon because of the emotional register Alexis reaches by the end of the talk, which is her first public appearance after the publication of the anthology Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines. This talk goes in-depth into the idea of visionary daughtering as inspired by Kakuya Shakur (Assata’s daughter) with loving gratitude to Cheryll Y. Greene and Alice Walker.

Sun Mar 29 - Today’s Texts

From Audre Lorde's Journal

April 16, 1979

"The enormity of our task, to turn the world around.  It feels like turning my life around, inside out.  If I can look directly a my life and my death without flinching I know there is nothing they can ever do to me again.  I must be content to see how really little I can do and still do it with an open heart.  I can never accept this, like I can't accept that turning life around is so hard, eating differently, sleeping differently , moving differently, being differently...I want the old me, bad as before."

July 10, 1980"I dreamt I had begun training to change my life, with a teacher who is very shadowy.  I was not attending classes, but I was going to learn how to change my whole life, live differently, do everything in a new and different way.  I didn't really understand, but I trusted this shadowy teacher.  Another young woman who was there told me she was taking a course in 'language crazure,' the opposite of discrazure (the cracking and wearing away of rock). I thought it would be very exciting to study the formation of crack and composure of words, so I told my teacher I wanted to take that course.  My teacher said okay, but it wasn't going to help me any because I had to learn something else, and I wouldn't get anything new from that class.  I replied, maybe not, but even though I knew all about rocks, for instance, I still liked studying their composition, and giving a name to the different ingredients of which they were made. It's very exciting to think of me being all the people in this dream."
