Past Events – Archived

In January we started off the year sitting at the feet of our elders in Durham at the dynamic annual Kwaanza celebration in Durham, NC. This was the perfect ending to a week of intergenerational Kwaanza events in the homes of folks. We folowed up the Kwaanza celebration by attending an intergenerational house party.

We worked on our mother-daughter relationships at theAlexis and her mother Pauline
Thicker Than Whatever: Unstoppable Mother/Daughter Relationships workshop hosted by Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs and her mom, Pauline McKenzie-Day, at Motherhouse in Atlanta, GA. It was wonderful to “recharge, remember and relearn how to create mother/daughter relationships that are affirming, inspiring and unstoppable in the face of homophobia, internalized oppression, cycles of violence and everything else that challenges our deep desire to love each other right!” It was an “intentional queer-affirming space full of love, healing, listening and support.”

Alexis represented at the Annual Bayard Rustin -Audre Lorde breakfast as one of the panelists/fish bowl participants on King Day in Atlanta. GA. The event was held at St. Marks UMC on Peachtree St. This was the 10th breakfast.

We also attended the Allied Media Conference’s Track Coordinators meeting in Detroit. The conference is held every year in Detroit toward the end of June. This year we are coordinating the elders track (even though we are not classic elders). We intend to facilitate the participation of self-identified elders of all ages and make the AMC accessible to people of all ages as well as host intentional intergenerational space and workshops.

In December we observed all 7 days of Intergenerational Queer Kwaanza in Durham, NC. We met with local Architect and Entrepreneur Pat to brainstorm an intergenerational assisted living community.

In November the Mobile Homecoming was in Tallahassee and Jacksonville, Florida. We even made a stop in Eatonville, FL to pay respect and see where Zora Neale Hurston lived. We launched our Mobile Homecoming Matchmakers with Mandy Carter and Matthias for their birthdays. we will be in Durham, NC . Also, in Durham we presented at the Infinity Diamond Club’s Couples Retreat and did some interviews as well.

We will begin October in Detroit then on to New York City. Alexis will be at The Blue Mountain Retreat Center for a few weeks. Following that we will be in upstate New York visiting MBHC loved ones in Albany. In Durham we did a workshop on Caretaking at the Infinity Diamond Club.

In September we will be in Atlanta for Black Gay Pride, The Quirky Black Girl Picnic, The Real Reading Rainbow: Queer Black Intergenerational Book Lust @ Charis Books & More. Then we will be in the low country of South Carolina, hopefully, discovering community. Finally, we will be off to Detroit.

August 2010

The Mobile Homecoming came back in the country and hit the ground running. We attended the First Annual Triangle Pride in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. Next we went to the Alternate Roots Annual Meeting in Arden (near Asheville), NC. …………………………………………………………………………………………

July 2010

Mobile Homecoming goes airborn to Anguilla to dream and skeem for black queer intergenerational love building while we spend time with family.

June 2010

June was our big kick off. On the agenda was Durham, Atlanta, Nashville, Louisville, Cincinnati, Detroit. Due to a robbery and some damage to the RV  we weren’t able to make it to Nashville, Louisville and Cincinnati. Details:
